The Sand Bench Trail in Zion National Park is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking views of the Towers of the Virgin, The Watchman, and other iconic formations. This moderately challenging hike features deep sand, slickrock ledges, and gradual elevation changes, making it a rewarding but somewhat strenuous trek. Starting at the Zion Lodge, hikers cross the Virgin River via the footbridge and begin a steady ascent of about 500 feet onto the Sand Bench plateau. Along the way, the trail provides unique perspectives of The Sentinel, The Watchman, and the Court of the Patriarchs, making it a great choice for those looking to escape the crowds while still enjoying stunning scenery.
Although the trail isn’t as well-known as other Zion hikes, it offers a peaceful and scenic experience, particularly in the spring and fall when temperatures are more moderate. The deep sand can make the hike feel more strenuous than the mileage suggests, so proper footwear and hydration are essential. Hikers should also be mindful of horseback tours that frequent the trail. The route eventually descends toward Court of the Patriarchs, where hikers can loop back or catch the park shuttle at Stop 4 for a ride back to the lodge. Whether you’re looking for a quiet escape or a fresh perspective of Zion’s towering cliffs, the Sand Bench Trail is well worth exploring.
As a bonus, keep heading north 1.2 miles past Annapolis Rock on the Appalachian Trail to reach Black Rock Cliffs. These cliffs offer beautiful views as well, and don’t attract nearly as many crowds as Annapolis Rock due to being located further up the trail.
Although there are many different entrances to this trail, we recommend setting your GPS to Zion Lodge in Zion National Park. Look for the Emerald Pools trailhead across the street. Cross the bridge and go south along the Sand Bench Trail.
