Introduction

Merrell has long earned a strong reputation among hikers for building high-quality, reliable hiking boots. The Merrell Moab 3—part of the well-known “Mother Of All Boots” lineup—continues that tradition. This series comes in several configurations: mid-height waterproof (the version reviewed here), low-cut, non-waterproof, and GORE-TEX options. The Moab 3 line is also available in multiple colorways including black, gravestone, beluga, and earth.

For this review, we picked up the Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof boots in the Earth colorway. Key advertised features include:

  • “Rugged” trail rating for technical trails with heavy debris
  • Waterproof membrane designed to keep feet dry in tough conditions
  • Exclusive Moab 3 footbed that contours to your foot for a comfortable stride
  • Vibram TC5+ outsole for optimal trail traction and performance
  • Merrell Air Cushion for shock absorption
  • Protective rubber toe and heel caps
  • Made with 100% recycled laces, webbing, and mesh lining

Materials and Build Quality

The Moab 3 uses pig-suede leather paired with breathable mesh in the non-waterproof models, while the waterproof versions feature leather paired with a waterproof mesh membrane—like the pair tested here.

Waterproof performance has been excellent so far. I crossed streams several times with water reaching above the laces and still ended up with dry socks. Over time, waterproof membranes can lose effectiveness, so I’ll update this review if/when durability changes. (Pro tip: for extending waterproofing life, consider using a product like Nikwax.)

The Vibram TC5+ outsole provides solid traction on rocky and uneven terrain. The lugs can pick up mud and gravel, so expect occasional cleaning. One thing to note: traction on wet rocks wasn’t as confidence-inspiring as my Osprey boots. Fresh out of the box, I nearly lost my footing on a slick stream crossing.

A standout characteristic of the Moab 3 build is weight. At roughly 2.42 lbs per pair, these boots are noticeably heavier and less nimble than many modern trail runners or lightweight hiking shoes.

Comfort

Right out of the box, the Merrell Moab 3s feel extremely comfortable and true to size. While they are heavier, they do contour quickly to your feet and offer great stability. Because they run warm, they’re especially suited for cold-weather and shoulder-season hiking—but may feel hot or cause sweaty feet during summer hikes.

Due to their sturdy structure, don’t expect much flex. These are traditional hiking boots, not flexible trail shoes, and they perform like it.

Value

The Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof typically retails around $170 USD, and based on build quality and overall performance, you’re getting durable, long-lasting boots for the price. For hikers who value reliability and comfort over chasing ultralight trends, the Moab 3 offers strong value.

Who Are the Merrell Moab 3 Boots For?

Best for:

  • Day hikes and moderate trails
  • Light backpacking with a modest load
  • Hikers who want comfort, durability, and great materials without breaking the bank
  • Average-to-wide-foot hikers wanting a stable, comfortable fit
  • Anyone seeking a dependable hiking boot that “just works”

Less ideal for:

  • Long thru-hikes where every ounce matters
  • Technical terrain requiring extremely aggressive traction
  • Narrow-footed hikers (unless paired with thicker socks or aftermarket insoles)
  • Ultralight hikers seeking the most nimble shoe possible

Final Verdict

The Merrell Moab 3 Mid Waterproof stands out as a dependable, well-built boot offering comfort, durability, and strong value. While not the lightest or most agile footwear on the market, it’s a fantastic all-around trail boot for most hikers. For day hikes and casual overnight trips—especially in cooler seasons—the Moab 3 is a boot I’d confidently choose again (as long as I’m fine with the weight).
